Christmas markets, mountain lunches, beautiful spas, and snow-covered villages all take on a special appeal during the colder months. France makes a strong case for traveling beyond spring, especially when pairing Paris with nearby Alsace, where Strasbourg and Colmar are at their most festive during the Christmas market season. |

Japan is hard to beat for travelers who want exceptional skiing paired with the food, hospitality and traditions that make a winter trip here so distinctive. On Hokkaido, Niseko is known for its famously light, dry powder, interconnected ski areas and views of Mount Yotei on a clear day. Off the mountain, evenings are just as memorable, with steaming onsens, tiny izakayas, bowls of Hokkaido ramen, fresh seafood and sake after a day in the snow. A few nights in Tokyo or Kyoto add even more culture, dining and contrast to the trip. |

Few places feel winter as central to the experience as Finnish Lapland. The draw is in seeing the Northern Lights, crossing the snowy wilderness by husky sled or snowmobile, meeting reindeer and experiencing a traditional Finnish sauna. The most memorable stays are often in small wilderness lodges or glass-roofed suites set well away from the busier resort areas. Deep snow, long Arctic nights and the chance to watch the aurora from your room give Lapland a sense of place that is hard to recreate elsewhere. |

Skiers who use the Epic Pass at home also have access to incredible slopes across Switzerland, including Verbier and its connected resorts. Fondue lunches on sunny mountain patios and sweeping views across the Alps are all part of the appeal, making Verbier an international favorite for good reason. A few days here can also be paired with nearby Adelboden, known for its charming village, excellent off-piste skiing, and refined chalet hotels. Travelers drawn to the classics can also look to Zermatt and St. Moritz, or venture farther afield to Courchevel and the Dolomites, each with its own take on the Alpine ski experience. |

Afterward, explore its steep lanes and public squares filled with cafés, shops and views of the Grand Harbour.
Nearby Mdina reveals another side of the island. Malta's former capital is a walled medieval city known as the Silent City, where narrow limestone streets are especially atmospheric after the daytime crowds leave. A private guide or dinner within the city walls makes the visit even more memorable. |
